Who are we?
When LEERDAMMER was first created, it was unlike any other cheese such as Gouda or Emmental. The special taste and the large holes were so unique that they decided to name the cheese LEERDAMMER. With its characteristic flavour and high quality LEERDAMMER remains unrivalled in its uniqueness.
LEERDAMMER was born in 1974, but its story actually begins much earlier. In 1914, Dutch businessman Cees Boterkooper acquired a small dairy in the town, Leerdam. At this time there was a small cheese shop in the neighbouring town, owned by Bastiaan Baars. In 1970 their paths crossed - both were looking for greater variety in the range of local cheeses and decided they should develop a new cheese. This cheese was to combine the mild flavour of Gouda with the large holes of Emmental. The result was LEERDAMMER, which of course owes its name to the nearby town of Leerdam. Today, LEERDAMMER is the Number 1 branded natural sliced cheese in the UK and there are multiple variations.
